What You Have to Know About Batik

Batik is widely known as a fabric that painted by liquid wax or we called this as “Malam”. It is painted with “Canting” to make the fabrics have more value. The word “Batik” came from the Javanese language. The first word “amba” has the meaning of the writing.  While the second word “titik” means dots. Therefore, if these two words are combined collective then it will have the meaning of writing the dots beautifully on a fabric. This is the reason why Batik patterns are so charming.

Batik has been recognized by UNESCO as one of the world’s Heritages since 2009. Batik has been considered as one of the cultural heritages since the era of our ancestors. Its diversity is the result of acculturation from the various cultures that exist in Indonesia. Their style and their patterns have never been the same, Batik has a deep philosophy and meaning.

There are two types of Batik. The first one is Batik Tulis, it made manually by the hands with the help of Canting to make the patterns. It takes time approximately 2 up to 3 months. The second is Batik Cap, it made by the stamp which has the patterns. It is only taken for a short time for this type, which is approximately 2 up to 3 days.

There are many kind patterns of Batik, such as Cuwiri, Sidomukti, Kawung, Parang Kusumo, Ceplok Kasatrian,  Nitik Karawitan, Truntum, Ciptoning, Tambal, Slobog, Parang Rusak Barong, and Udan Liris. And some of the patterns are combined collective. These are the common patterns of Batik that we usually meet in our daily life.
