You could wear batik in almost every occasion, whether it is formal, semi formal or even casual event. Therefore, many people are wondering of how actually batik is being made. To answer that question this article will talk about how to make batik.

How to make batik

Batik is a technique of dying fabric by applying warm wax that is mixed with paraffin, resins and fat in order to ward off the dye. The fabric is usually made from cotton, but silk could be used too. The first thing that is needed to be done when making batik is putting the fabric or cloth on the dye, you need to left the pattern unwaxed and let the waxed parts bare and left them uncolored. To remove the wax, you need to wash it with warm water. Always keep it in mind that you need to wash it gently. The next process is rewaxed the fabric and immersed it into different colors of dye. When there are four colors, then the cloth is dyed eight times, four times on every side.

Normally lighter colors are the first one to be dyed. This is done to allow overdoing it with the darker colors. There will be a time where dyes are oozing under the waxed borders thus will make a fascinating spider webs and appealing vague pattern, that is so cute.

Batik in one side or both sides

Typically batik that is made from silk is only died on one side. Cotton could also be dyed on one side too, but in Indonesia, people tend to dye it on both sides. To dye the both sides, it should be done cautiously and it typically will require more time. This kind of technique is usually called two-sided batik. As a result, the batik that is done both sides will have very clear pattern on both sides. Meanwhile, the technique of just waxing one side only is called one-sided batik. The result of this technique is the patterns that appear in one side is so clear, but on the other side it will be less clear but it is still visible. Therefore, this one-sided batik is regarded as average batik. Therefore, the two-sided batik will be more expensive, rather than one-sided batik.
